Embodiment

There are many schools of thought that teach mastery over the body. Almost like it’s some inconvenient thing you need, but shouldn’t pay that much attention to. One of my early teachers of metaphysics and meditation gave these lessons, that personal evolution was rising above the messages of the body and connecting with blissful, spiritual (non-physical) knowing. And, in order to do this, you have to ignore your physical self. To this, I say that there are truths but also additions I would like to add. It is a lot easier to meditate when you’re not in physical pain and we have more energy for personal evolution when we are nutritionally-nourished and rested. For both of these, you must at some points through your day, attend to your physical needs. I’ve also had personal trainers who instructed me to push through pain for just “ten more” of something; that the body was to be mastered for the previously-set goal. Again, there is wisdom in this, with additions necessary. Fast and hard rarely works with health and fitness goals unless you have absolutely flawless instruction, extraordinary embodied, self-awareness and long-term commitment. Hard and fast in the short-term creates so many more injuries than slow and steady. Hard and fast in weight loss, usually leads to most of the kilograms ending up back on, sometimes with a few extra coming, too. I have also hired life and business coaches who had the same philosophy. That once you set a goal, all resistance, stress or lack of motivation equates to some kind of self-sabotage. When it comes up, you need to push through, “go hard, or go home!”. If you want to be successful you need to push, strive, hustle and get the stuff done, even if it feels uncomfortable or you are ignoring other parts of your life. Now, again, there is truth in here, but only if you are completely aware of what the discomfort is about and make an active choice to continue with the pace and goal you’ve set with full understanding. I cannot tell you how many clients I’ve worked with who have achieved miraculous work goals, only to reach them alone. Partners tend to leave if you don’t ever stop to ask “How are you?” and are only focused on yourself and your goals. Your health tends to leave as well, if you don’t give your body the tools and ingredients it needs.

Caring for our physical selves and listening to our embodied wisdom is of great importance so as to have a pain-free, energised body with which to enjoy your successes!

Our bodies get a bad rap in many religions, too. This notion that the needs of the body are basic and beneath the wisdom of the human heart and mind. That sensual pleasure is self-indulgent or sinful. That being a sexual being is only acceptable in a tiny, narrow way (decided long ago by someone other than yourself) and the rest is distasteful and disgusting. Glorifying abstinence over experience.
